Eighth Annual Meeting of the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) 2021

The eighth ICEF was held online over two days (October 6 and 7) as part of Tokyo "Beyond-Zero" Week 2021, which is an intensive series of international conferences related to energy and the environment with a view toward achieving carbon neutrality—and even going "beyond zero" (i.e., reducing the accumulated amount of CO2).

Minister Hagiuda delivered a written message to ICEF in which he stated that it will be important that countries pursue various pathways in line with their respective circumstances in order to become carbon neutral, and that creating innovation through research and development will be the key ...

SGI Response to the Consultation on the Energy Strategy for Northern Ireland

The context for energy has changed substantially since the 2010 Strategic Energy Framework (SEF) was published. In June 2019 the UK became the first major economy to commit to a 100 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This ‘net zero’ target represents a significant step-change in the commitment to addressing the climate crisis.

The Department for the Economy has begun the process of developing a new energy strategy to decarbonise the Northern Ireland energy sector by 2050 at least cost to the consumer.

Any new strategic direction for energy in Northern Ireland must consider the existing energy ...

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - Sixth Assessment Report

Last update on Aug. 12, 2021.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - Sixth Assessment Report

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. The IPCC prepares comprehensive Assessment Reports about the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge on climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for reducing the rate at which climate change is taking place. In this Sixth Assessment Report, Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis, the report addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system and climate change, bringing together the latest advances in climate science, and combining multiple lines of evidence from paleoclimate, observations ...

Press Release - The official birth of the EU DSO Entity

Press release - The official birth of the EU DSO Entity

On 8 June 2021, the long-awaited official launch of the EU DSO Entity took place. E.DSO members experienced a prestigious momentum by attending the constitutive General Assembly and the first meeting of Board of Directors and constituting its governance along with various organisation aspects.

The launch of the Entity is a remarkable achievement for the four electricity DSO Associations (CEDEC, E.DSO, Eurelectric and GEODE) that have been working intensively in the past couple of years towards its creation. It has been challenging since there are around 2500 DSOs ...

Making power grids fit for the transition will create 500,000 jobs

Distribution grids are the backbone of the digital and energy transition, as they ensure a continuous and reliable electricity flow, integrate the majority of renewable energy sources and enable the creation of new services for consumers. But to be fit-for-purpose in an increasingly decarbonised, decentralised and digitalised power system, there is an urgent need to ramp up investments in Europe’s distribution grids.

European distribution grids will need investments of €375-425 billion until 2030. That is the main conclusion of a landmark study conducted by the industry bodies Eurelectric and E.DSO. A first of its kind, the study which ...

Catch Up - Connecting the Dots: Distribution Grid investment to Power the Energy Transition

We're sorry you weren't able to attend our digital event. The recording will be made available on our website shortly. https://www.eurelectric.org/events/

Key messages are the following:

  • European distribution grids will need investments of €375-425 billion until 2030 to be to be fit-for-purpose in an increasingly decarbonised, decentralised and digitalised power system.
  • Modernisation, renewables integration and electrification are key investment drivers. The infrastructure is aging: 50 % of the grids are likely to be over 40 years old by the end of the decade. Moreover, expansions and replacements will be needed to integrate renewables, 70% of ...
