Smart Cities Australia

Last update on April 25, 2016.

Dear Paddy,

Waiting 30 years for smart homes and still counting

Back in 1980 when I still lived in the Netherlands I worked with the
Dutch futurist Griet Titulaer (an astronomer by trade) in building ‘The
Home of the Future’. I would say that at that stage it was more built
around innovative interior design with automation features. Home
entertainment also played a key role in it.

At that stage these concepts had nowhere near the amount of technology
that we are seeing in the homes of the future that we envisage today,
but in essence lots of the elements ...

Sunshine Coast leading the smart city movement

Sunshine Coast leading the smart city movement

Sunshine Coast Council hosted the inaugural Australian Smart Communities Summit in Caloundra. The fact that the event happened there is a reflection of the commitment that this council has to the development of a smart city.

One of the most critical elements here is leadership, and both the mayor and the CEO are passionate about this development and are leading the process from the top. This also results in a holistic approach and, where possible, developments are aligned to create synergy, cost savings and a better outcome. For this purpose they are blending ...

Battery energy storage has a viable future in grid operation support

Last update on Feb. 1, 2016.

Global Smart Grid Federation’s worldwide view gives electrical storage in power grids a real economical chance, if regulation is willing to assist.

Today, GSGF published a report on electrical storage in power grids, assessing the possibilities of battery storage in the electrical grid as viable, on a global scale. GSGF envisions that batteries will be firstly used for frequency control, followed by local peak shifting. When this happens, battery production should increase and costs should decrease, creating opportunities to use batteries for other applications as well, such a microgrids and renewable energy integration use. However, in the end regulation ...

AI AND SMART CITIES With Paul Budde

AI AND SMART CITIES With Paul Budde

AI AND SMART CITIES

I have written quite a bit about artificial intelligence (AI) over the
last 20 years - and perhaps even earlier than that. (Searches in our
blog go back to 1999)

This in itself is an indication that things aren't moving all that
quickly. But looking back - in particular at the capabilities of smart
phones and their apps - I can see that progress has been made. Certainly
not through big bang events, but slowly and steadily nevertheless. And
this is how progress should be made around artificial intelligence
because it will absolutely transform human society and we ...

A Roadmap for the New Power Generation

Last update on Jan. 27, 2016.

A Roadmap for the New Power Generation

Geneva, Switzerland, 19 January 2016 – Industry estimates show that non-OECD countries will have to double their investments in electricity by 2040 to keep pace with demand. A new report from the World Economic Forum, released today, offers solutions to improve investment attractiveness of the power sector that would help to bridge this critical investment gap, as the countries face increased competition for capital necessary to invest in power infrastructure.
According to International Energy Agency (IEA), meeting the electricity demands of consumers and businesses in non-OECD countries will require $13 trillion investments by 2040 – outspending OECD markets by a factor of ...
