Electricity Research Centre

The Electricity Research Centre (ERC) is an industry-university research collaboration with research driven by the energy industry worldwide and a particular emphasis on the Irish electricity sector.

The ERC is based in Electrical Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD) with an Energy Economics branch at Trinity College Dublin (TCD).

There are four major research themes, organised into four groups within the ERC: Energy Economics ; System analysis; Operation and control; System planning.

There are also two major project initiatives, led by the ERC and involving multiple partners :

  • The Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems (SEES) Cluster (a cooperative venture between academic institutions and companies ) is tackling fundamental applied research and demonstration challenges to underpin the emergence of future integrated, smart and sustainable electrical energy systems
  • Grid Integration of Renewables, Distributed Generation and Flexible Demand, ERCGI project is a five year research programme funded under the Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI) Cycle 5 and co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
